Management Information
It is essential that parents, teachers and
school administrators educate themselves and take
bullying seriously.
Too many cases of youth and school bullying have
ended tragically. In most of these cases there were
signs. The target of bullying will usually cry out
for help but it may not be direct and obvious. Alert
adults will notice subtle changes in behaviour. Loss
of interest in activities that used to bring satisfaction.
Anger, depression, obsession. You know your child
best. If you notice unusual changes in behaviour DO
NOT ignore them!
A general definition of bullying
would be when a student is subjected to ongoing abuse
from one or more individuals. The form of this abuse
can range from physical assualt, threats and intimidation,
verbal abuse, humiliation, rude gestures and making
faces, spreading rumors and gossip, social isolation
or a combination of these factors.
School bullying, as well as other forms of bullying,
usually arises where there is a power imbalance. Bullies
are not necessarily acting out of low self-esteem
or insecurity as is commonly believed. They are more
often very popular and demean others as a means of
controlling them and maintaining their own social
status.
It is also not easy to place victims of bullying
into stereotypical groups. In fact some victims of
bullying are themselves bullies as well.
What is clear is that school bullying has
lasting impacts for both the target and the bully.
Those who are subjected to bullying can feel the consequences
long after they graduate. The toll on self-esteem,
issues of trust, inhibited socialization conspire
to limit future success in their careers.
Even if your child
is not directly involved in
school bullying or other forms of bullying they are
still
a bystander or witness and are being affected by it.

It is easy to see that once they enter the workforce
these students are at risk to underperform compared
to their peers with a more positive and self-assured
outlook. This results in personal and financial consequences
that can negatively affect them for the rest of their
lives.
Bullies themselves are at a much higher risk
of continuing their anti-social behaviour and running
afoul of the law. Dan Olweus, world renowned
bullying expert from the University of Bergen in Norway
says, "In my follow-up studies, some 35% to 40%
of boys who were characterised as bullies in Grades
6 to 9 (ages 13 to 16) had been convicted of at least
three officially registered crimes by the age of 24.
In contrast, this was true of only 10% of boys who
were not classified as bullies. In other words, former
school bullies were four times more likely than other
pupils to engage in relatively serious crime."
Even if your child is not directly involved in school
bullying or other forms of bullying they are still
a bystander or witness and are being affected by it.
They are being intimidated into silence and being
made to live in a climate of fear. Everyone is affected
by bullying.

Discipline With Love >
Permanent child discipline can be achieved only by
way of love and by no other means or methods. Selective
use of specific discipline techniques serves the purpose
if you use them with lots of love. It certainly works
where punishment, scolding, spanking, nagging have
failed.
